America

The United States of America is one of the greatest countries in the world. It is situated on the North America continent and is washed by two oceans: the Pacific and the At­lantic. The USA boarders only two countries — Canada and Mexico.

This great country has a lot of mountains, rivers, lakes. The main mountains are the Appalachi and the Cordilierra. The longest rivers are the Mississippi and the Missouri. The cli­mate of the country is very change­able. In the southern part it is sub­tropical while the northern part has a very cold weather in winter.

America has fifty states and one Federal district of Columbia where the capital of the country is situated. The capital of the USA is Wash­ington. It stands on the Potomac river in the eastern part of the coun­try. The main cities are located at the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. New-York, the largest city of the country, is situated on Manhattan is­land. Other large cities are San-Francisco, Los-Angeles, Detroit, Chi­cago, Phoenix and Dallas..

The USA is a country of highly developed industry and agriculture. The main industrial centres are Chicago and Detroit, with their greatest automobile company "Gene­ral Motors". There are many farms with various agricultural products. Grains, fruit and vegetables are grown on numerous fields especially in the South.

The USA is a country with great holidays, customs and traditions. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting countries in the world.

BOOKS IN OUR LIFE

«Books and friends should be few but good», says an English proverb. «Except a living man there is nothing more wonderful than a book! The book is certainly one of the greatest inventions of man. It is a friend and a teacher. We learn many things by reading books. Books teach people to live. The book is a faithful friend. They form our values and our characters. It gives us an opportunity to imagine the future, to look into the past. One can learn a lot by reading books.

There are a lot of libraries in our country, where we can choose any book we need. Everyone has the right to use public libraries. The librarian is always ready to help you to find a book on any subject.

Talks, exhibitions and other events take place in libra­ries. Ex­cept reading special and scientific literature it is a great pleasure to read belles-lettres.

Different people like to read different kinds of it. It depends on one's taste and character. Some people prefer detectives or science fiction. Others like historical books. Girls and women prefer love stories. Children like comics very much.

As for me, I prefer to read science fiction. It is very interesting and exciting for me as my hobby is computing. I read that some scientists think that without the computer the 21^st century would be impossible. Computers are penetrating all spheres of human activity. In many of them they become indispensable. They calculate orbits, guide spaceships and planes, play chess, teach pupils, house wives to choose a menu. We often her that the increasing flood of information will be one of the problems of the 21^st century. A computer may help to solve it too. It’s hard enumerate all the uses the computer may be put too. To my mind any books are our best friends. We must treat them with care and they will give us a lot of pleasure.

LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Foreign languages are absolutely necessary for us no­wadays because of our growing international contacts with all the countries of the world.

There are many reasons why we begin to study foreign language. One of them is to be able to communi­cate with other people who use this language. We may be planning to travel in one or two countries where the lan­guage is spoken. If we know the language of a foreign country, we can talk to its people and understand what they are saying to us. If we are working in any branch of science, we naturally wish to read scientific books and magazines in other languages. Making business nowadays also means knowing foreign languages because of the gro­wing international business contacts. Knowing foreign lan­guages helps people of different countries to develop mutual friendship and understanding. We can also make our intellectual and cultural horizons wider through con­tacts with people of another culture. It is also very inte­resting to read foreign literature in the original. We can also read foreign newspapers and magazines and to un­derstand films in foreign languages without any help.

Learning foreign languages is compulsory in all the secondary and higher schools in our country. English is a very popular language. People use it in many parts of the world and there is a lot of business correspondence and literature in English.

I think, it is very important to know at least one fore­ign language — English, German, French, Spanish or any other one.

My future profession.

Finishing school is the beginning of the independent life for millions of school leavers. Many roads are open before them: technical schools, institutes and universities. But it is not easy thing to choose a profession out of more than 2,000 existing in the world. Some pupils follow the ad­vice of their parents, others can't de­cide
